Google Reviews: How Ontario Contractors Can Get More 5-Star Reviews

Google search and SEO optimization

Google reviews can make or break a contractor's business. When a homeowner in Ontario needs a plumber, electrician, or HVAC tech, they almost always check the reviews first. The business with more reviews and a higher rating gets the call. Here is how to build a steady stream of five-star reviews for your contracting business.

Why Google Reviews Matter More Than Ever

Google uses reviews as a ranking factor. Businesses with more positive reviews show up higher in local search results and the Google Map Pack. A contractor with 80 five-star reviews will almost always outrank one with 5 reviews, even if both do excellent work.

Reviews also affect whether someone actually calls you. Studies show that 87 percent of consumers read online reviews for local businesses. If your rating is below 4.5 stars or you have very few reviews, many people will scroll right past you.

Ask at the Right Moment

The single most effective way to get more reviews is simple: ask. But timing matters. The best time to ask is right after you have completed a job and the customer is happy. They just saw you fix their leaking pipe or get their furnace running again. They are relieved, grateful, and most likely to take action.

Do not wait until the next day or send an email a week later. Strike while the iron is hot. Before you leave the job site, say something like: "I am glad we got that sorted out for you. If you have a minute, a Google review would really help my business. I can send you the link right now."

Make It Ridiculously Easy

Most customers are happy to leave a review but will not go through the hassle of searching for your business on Google, finding the review section, and figuring out how to write one. You need to remove every possible barrier.

Create a direct review link for your Google Business Profile. You can find this in your Google Business dashboard under "Ask for reviews." This link takes the customer directly to the review form with one click.

Send this link via text message right after the job. A simple text works: "Thanks for choosing us. If you were happy with our work, a quick Google review would mean a lot." Text messages have a 98 percent open rate compared to 20 percent for email.

Respond to Every Single Review

This is where most contractors drop the ball. Responding to reviews, both positive and negative, shows that you care about your customers and your reputation. It also signals to Google that you are an active, engaged business.

For positive reviews, keep it simple and genuine. Thank them by name, mention the specific work you did, and say you look forward to helping them again. For negative reviews, stay professional. Acknowledge the concern, apologize for any inconvenience, and offer to make it right offline. Never argue in public.

Display Reviews on Your Website

Your Google reviews should not just live on Google. Embed them on your website, especially on your homepage and a dedicated testimonials page. When a potential customer visits your site, seeing dozens of five-star reviews immediately builds trust.

The best contractor websites update their reviews automatically so the most recent ones always appear. This keeps the content fresh, which Google also likes for SEO purposes.

Set Up Automated Review Requests

If you do 5 to 10 jobs per week, manually texting every customer is going to slip through the cracks. That is where automated review request systems come in.

Many CRM and field service management tools can automatically send a review request text or email after a job is marked complete. If you do not use a CRM, there are standalone review management tools that do the same thing for $20 to $50 per month.

The key is consistency. A contractor who asks every single customer for a review will build up dozens of new reviews every month. One who only remembers occasionally will barely grow their review count.

What Not to Do

Never offer incentives for reviews. Google's terms of service prohibit this, and they are getting better at detecting it. Do not ask employees or friends to leave fake reviews either. Google can detect review patterns and will remove suspicious reviews, sometimes penalizing your listing in the process.

Also avoid review gating, where you only ask happy customers to leave public reviews and funnel unhappy ones to a private feedback form. Google has explicitly banned this practice.
